NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE

Naturopathic Medicine is a system of primary care that promotes wellness and the prevention of disease, while also addressing and treating the root cause of acute and chronic health concerns using a wide range of natural therapies. We use traditional medical wisdom combined with modern medical research and diagnostics to offer a customized treatment plan for our patients. We strive to treat the whole person – physically, emotionally and spiritually – on an individual basis. Treatments can be used on their own or paired with conventional medicine. Naturopathic Medicine is useful for patients of all ages and in any stage of health.

Naturopathic Medicine is a system of primary care that promotes wellness and the prevention of disease, while also addressing and treating the root cause of acute and chronic health concerns using a wide range of natural therapies.

The philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine is based on 6 principles:

  1. First, Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere) – Naturopaths treat in the gentlest, safest way possible to treat your health issues and minimize side effects as well as the suppression of symptoms.

  2. The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae) – Our bodies have the natural and inherent ability to restore and maintain health. Naturopathic Doctors use various treatments to enhance and support this natural ability and to help prevent further issues from happening. We work to identify and remove obstacles to recovery, to allow for more complete healing.

  3. Identify and Treat the Cause (Tolle Causam) – The primary goal of Naturopathic Medicine is to identify, remove and treat the underlying cause of health issues, while still helping to alleviate the symptoms of disease. Treating the underlying cause allows for deeper, longer lasting healing.

  4. Treat the Whole Person (Tolle Totum) – Disease affects the entire person, not just a specific part of the body or system. Therefore, Naturopathic Doctors take into account not just the physical symptoms patients come in with, but also the mental, emotional, genetic, spiritual, environmental and social factors affecting each individual. Every person is unique and different, and each requires individualized care to best achieve results.

  5. Doctor as Teacher (Docere) – One of our most important tenets, Naturopathic Doctors share information and knowledge, and teach their patients about themselves, their symptoms, their health issues, and how best to stay in balance. This in turn allows the patient to become more capable of maintain their own health. We also respect the knowledge we gain regularly from our patients. A doctor’s greatest teacher is their patient.

  6. Disease Prevention and Health Promotion – Naturopathic Doctors are mandated to be proactive in teaching and implementing disease prevention and health promotion. Naturopaths assess current lifestyle habits, mental/emotional/spiritual states, and genetic and environmental influences, and then make appropriate recommendations in partnership with their patients to prevent disease and promote health.

Naturopathic Doctors utilize a range of natural therapies to best assist patients on their path to health. They are all meant to assist the body’s healing process, and are often most effective when combined. Dr. Cristina draws from these therapies when developing individualized treatment plans.

CLINICAL NUTRITION

Nutrition and the therapeutic use of food as well as supplemental nutrients is a cornerstone of Naturopathic Medicine. Many chronic illnesses have been linked to poor dietary choices, or imbalances in the diet. Naturopaths are trained to evaluate what you are currently eating and not eating, and make appropriate recommendations regarding dietary modification and nutritional supplementation to have the greatest impact on your health.

ACUPUNCTURE AND TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE

The key principle in Chinese medicine is to restore balance to the system. All symptoms, both physical and emotional give us clues as to the nature of the imbalance in a patient, and using acupuncture, herbs and lifestyle changes, we can restore balance and therefore a better state of health.

HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINE

Homeopathy is a system of medicine based on the principle of “like cures like”. It utilizes diluted doses of natural substances to stimulate the body’s innate healing potential. It is a very safe medicine for all ages and do not interact with prescription medications.

PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND HYDROTHERAPY

Naturopathic physical medicine includes a variety of hands-on techniques for soft tissues, joints and spine, as well as exercise prescription to help restore health. Hydrotherapy, or the therapeutic use of hot and cold water is another effective treatment in numerous health concerns.

LIFESTYLE COUNSELING

Naturopathic Doctors understand the interrelatedness of emotional states, mental attitudes, core beliefs and physical health. An important aspect of naturopathic healing is to identify and address all facets of a person’s life, including the impact of stressors, diet, exercise and environment on a patient, and help that patient develop healthier habits.
